04 Why I Do This
Fatima M., founder of Tend Collective, surrounded by pink florals

The story underneath the systems.

I have been the one who holds it together for as long as I can remember. The eldest of four. The one who helped hold things steady while my mother finished her degree at Harvard.

I am also the young mother. I've been one who plans five steps ahead because someone has to, because the ground under everyone else stays steady only if you stay ahead of it. I did not learn surviving improper structure from a classroom. I learned to survive it because there was no other option, and somewhere along the way the thing I did to survive became the thing I am best at.

Process allowed me to graduate high school a year early and go to my dream college at FAMU. Process continued to help me continue school after I became a young mother. It got me through high-intensity live shows as an audio engineer, calling cues in real time with zero room for error. It got me through an MBA program on top of all of it.

I have often been the only one in the room, the only Black woman in the audio engineering program, then the only one on the job. When you are the exception, people are watching, and you learn to be twice as prepared, to leave no gap for anyone to point to. It also made me good at seeing the system underneath the chaos, and building the one that should have been there all along.

05 How I Show Up

Vision isn't
the hard part.
Carrying it alone is.

Process has been the undercurrent of my life for so long that I fell in love with it, not just professionally, but personally. I plan my vision one, three, five years out the same way I planned a live show: I see where I am going, then I build the path to get there.

Vision is not the hard part. The women I work with have it in abundance. What eventually becomes impossible is carrying all of it in their heads, doing everything alone, growing faster than any system can hold.

I know that exhaustion. I also know what happens on the other side of it, when the right structure finally takes the weight off and you can put your energy into what actually moves the needle.

That is the whole reason Tend Collective exists. I build the systems so you can lead the mission. Not from above, not from a framework I read in a book, but from someone who has stood where you are standing and found her way through by building the thing that holds.

You have the vision. Let me build the structure that lets you carry it.

Structure that lets
you carry the vision
